I attended the highly professional and confident launch of MarriagEquality today at the Mansion House. Packed to the rafters with well-wishers, the meeja, and politicians, the various groupings to do with LGBT life in Ireland were out in calm, eloquent, and at times passionate unanimity. It really is a no-brainer – equality or not?
It’s rather pleasing to see an elegant legislative solution being proposed that makes perfect sense. Change the law by a simple amendment, then worry about the constitution afterwards. The reason that this is so nifty is that it stops the constitution being used by politicians as something to hide behind. If the supreme court dares to go against the will of the people, as expressed by the legislature, then it would need substantive grounds to declare the legislation unconstitutional.
