Robbie McDonald in Bewley’s Grafton Street

Robbie McDonaldI still love listening to ‘s Mighty Quiet (available on iTunes here). He’s doing a gig in Bewley’s Grafton Street this Sunday at 8.30pm. He’ll be playing a few new songs with a few new band members. Support from Junah. At Bewley’s Theatre, Grafton Street, Sun. 19th Aug., Doors 8:30 p.m. €10.

Patrick Moran is playing Fender Rhodes and harmonica, Mark Palmer is playing guitar and background vocals, Conor G is on bass, and Jess from Jess and the Cigarettes is lending her sultry vocals as well!

Update/Review: It was a brilliant evening, packed with an enthusiastic crowd. Junah were really good – two very talented singers, harmonising beautifully, with excellent material, original and insightful. But they let themselves down in a way by the way they joked and laughed with each other and with their fans in the back – they treated it as if they were just jamming among friends, and their corpsing and flogging a joke to death in between songs was mildly irritating. When it spilled over into a couple of songs, I felt cheated – they had created a really moving and soulful sound, and they weren’t giving it the respect it deserved. You’re better than you think, guys!

As for Robbie McDonald, he was on top form with his new band, opening with two really touching tracks, written since Mighty Quiet, that blew me away, which I am dying to hear again. He sang with an intensity and emotional impact that made the set – especially the sadder songs – unforgettable. He has such an open, lovable persona on stage, making it seem easy, and yet his professionalism was impeccable, it was a tight, well-rehearsed set that had us all cheering for more. “Comic Book Hero” is still my favourite track. But the way he’s been writing recently, I suspect there’ll be a few more favourites to come.
