Had a great night at Crawdaddy last night, seeing the lovely Jeffrey Lewis play. He’s a very funny and talented guy, singing with cartoon books in a Dylan-esque way (I liked the Creeping Brain best) and with echoes and references to Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and Ginsberg. I first loved him when a friend sent me a song of his called “Chelsea Hotel” about meeting a girl for a couple of minutes, and talking about Cohen’s eponymous song. Which sadly he didn’t sing last night, despite it being called for – he seems reluctant to sing old songs, wanting his new work to be just as much in demand. But, that’s not the way the world works. He’s very endearing and great fun in a small venue, which was packed and appreciative. It was nice to get out and bump into people, I almost felt like a regular person.
