It appears that a little encouragement goes a long way. One of the funniest and sharpest writers I know has a smooth new blog. Known for his pithy commentary on men and masculinity and popular culture, his controversial “anti-gay” sentiments, not to mention the infamous beast that is the “metrosexual” (a word he coined), I’ll be fascinated to see how he’ll fare with blogging, and whether he’ll enjoy writing more frequently than he’s used to as a feature writer and journalist. What shines through though in his written work, in my opinion, is his genuine love of men, his often withering irony, and his deft capacity to highlight homophobia wherever he finds it. (I’m thinking especially of his righteous and sustained fury at how the tabloids did for Michael Barrymore.) But he’s also a fierce critic of the gay scene, ever since he first caught my attention in 1997 with Anti-Gay. I hope he gets the quality of debate and discussion from other bloggers that he deserves.
